Welcome to the prologue. Much like a bike race, this is an intro to my new website. The best way to do that is to give you a brief overview of who I am and a look at why I started this site.
Who
I’m a father of four with a full-time job and a competitive cyclist. I’ve been racing for over a decade in various disciplines including road, track and cyclocross. I also spent a year doing triathlons, culminating with Ironman Florida.
I’m purely a cyclocross racer now, but every once in a while I’ll race a criterium. I’m a self coached athlete looking to help others excel and learn the science behind training. When you get down to the nuts and bolts, I’m an aggressive rider who loves to suffer.
When I’m not riding my bike, I’m doing the usual dad stuff: housework, shuttling kids around and drinking some beer.
Why
Let’s be real, there are dozens, probably even hundreds, of coaching and training blogs out there. Some are good, based on reason, science and experience. Then, there are others that are trying to sell you something or give you the “secrets” to becoming a better racer. Usually there’s the added advantage that this will happen as quickly as possible.
Therefore, the question remains: why start this site?
My main goal is to share my experiences in the world of cycling through training, racing and general musings. Personally, I have begun digging into the science of training and have been utilizing my knowledge to improve my training and racing. As a father of four with a house, full time job and kids who play sports, I feel like my insights and thoughts may be more interesting and practical than a lot of what’s out there.
Am I going to give you the secret to going from a Cat 5 to Grand Tour winner in 3 months? Probably not. However, I’m willing to share my experiences and knowledge when it comes to training. I’ll even share a few stories along the way. If I get really bored, maybe I’ll eat a pound of bacon for breakfast and go for a 5 hour ride. Then I can write a post as I’m passed out on the side of the road waiting for my (very angry) wife to pick me up.
I still need a crafty tagline, so for now…enjoy and “…on your left.”
